Running on Empty?
[from Yoga Journal, by Andrea Kowalski]My teacher claims that yogis who experience a deeper quality of sleep actually need less of it to sustain themselves. I started to doubt the quality of my sleep routine recently when I fell asleep unexpectedly in yoga class. I wouldn't be writing about it had it been the minor Savasana catnap—but I fell asleep while sitting up, in the middle of an active pranayama.
This week, focus on improving the quality of your slumber. Practice several of these postures, as well as some pranayama throughout your day, to ensure an easy transition into rest. Consider the difference between relaxation and meditation, and see what John Friend has to say about practicing while sleep-deprived. Finally, indulge in a new 20-minute practice video (shoulder opening) from Jason Crandell.
Namaste.
