Dinner Club

Who knew "be right back" would mean two months . . .

Oh well. I'm back.

Last fall, Guy and I started a small "dinner club" with two other couples. The gist of the club is that we rotate "hosts" and the host chooses the main dish. From there, the other couples coordinate to complete the meal and bring different dishes/drinks to the hosts' house.

On the first dinner, Guy and I spent about 5 hours in an attempt to recreate Julia Child's famous Boeuf Bourguignon. It turned out good, but not 5-hours-good. Monica and Matt brought garlicy mashed potatoes and Matthew and Phong brought the yummiest creamy dream desserts.

Next, Monica and Matt hosted everyone for a Mexican themed night - yum. They made a spicy main dish, complimented by Queso Frito from Matthew and Phong and a tres-leches dessert from Guy and I.

In February, we all met at Barolo Grill during Denver's restaurant week and then ice cream. We experimented with different dishes at dinner, but had the most fun trying different white and red wines.

Finally, our last meeting was at Matthew and Phong's house for Vietnamese Spring Rolls. So amazing!!! Our best dinner yet. They had barbecued pork, shrimp, shrimp on sugar cane skewers, fish sauce, fresh cilantro, different types of fresh mint, spring rolls (with the rose on the wrapper) and it was just awesome. The meal was topped off with a peanuty appetizer from Monica, a cabbage salad from Dani and Guy, wine and Sapporo beer, and a kiwi sorbet by Matt.

Fun times. There's nothing I love more than trying new foods and cooking for a group. In the fall, when Guy returns to Colorado, we'll have to continue trying new foods ...

post script: And, we had a fun brunch in late April with homemade biscotti (yum), muffins, smoothies, french press coffee, etc.

Dinner group sounds so fun. It's so hard to cook for just two people, or in my case just two people and two picky kids! I hate mealtimes! But, I don't think I'd fit in your group well, you guys sound so cultured and fancy!! Fun times though! Hope you're having a great summer and it's good to hear from you

I spent nearly 2 days making Thomas Keller's Beef Bourguignon - and it was worth every second. Super cool idea to do your dinner club!
